Erase Your Wrinkles with Anti Aging Creams

Aging is a natural process in every living individual. A better understanding of the aging process and ways to delay the visible signs of aging go a long way in helping a person look younger for longer. Wrinkles are the first harbingers of aging and wrinkle creams are the best ways to tackle this issue. In addition to erasing years from your appearance, these creams also smoothen and tighten the skin, reduce discoloration, improve hydration and enhance skin tone and complexion.

The Emergence of Wrinkles

Generally, women are more concerned about their looks and how they appear to others. When they spot wrinkles or dark spots on the face, their immediate anxiety will be that their partners will no longer find them attractive. To make themselves youthful-looking and appealing to their men, these women are ready to spend a fortune on anti aging products.

After all, it is a more affordable and relatively risk-free option compared to cosmetic surgical procedures that can be painful and expensive.

Wrinkles on the face first become visible in the area around the eyes since the skin around the eyes is extremely thin. Later on, you will notice wrinkles at the sides of the mouth. As time moves on, deep wrinkles begin to appear on the forehead.? This is the time that most people begin to comment on your wrinkles. However, you can take a proactive approach to the situation by beginning to use a good quality wrinkle remover cream before the signs of aging set in.

The Ideal Product

To be effective in reducing wrinkles and maintaining the overall appearance of the skin, an anti wrinkle cream must replenish the skin with moisture, promote the natural concentrations of collagen in the skin, protect the skin from sun damage and improve the overall skin tone.

To accomplish these results, the cream must contain scientifically tested and proven ingredients in the right amounts. The best wrinkle removal products in the market promise noticeable reduction in fine lines within six weeks of regular use.

If you have deep wrinkles on the face in addition to fine lines, it would be a good idea to check out hydroxatone reviews. According to these reviews, Matrixyl 3000 in hydroxatone helps reduce the appearance of deep wrinkles by up to 44 percent. The scientifically tested ingredient also helps promote collagen production, smoothen the skin and improve the skin tone and complexion. By promoting the natural levels of Hyaluronic acid, fibronectin and collagen in the skin, Matrixyl 3000 keeps skin fresh and youthful-looking. Video: Millions dreaming of the big win

>>> the reality is you have a much better chanlsz of being struck by lightning than matching all six numbers in tonight's mega millions drawing. but it doesn't help to dream. that's what many americans have been doing, including kevin tibbles.

>> life, liberty, and the pursuit of lottery tickets. what is it that makes this a nation of american dreamers?

>> i play the lottery because it's a dream.

>> i'm dreaming big-time, yeah.

>> we're a country literally built on the quest for a better life . it's what brought the mayflower, what drove the gold rush and the black gold oil booms. americans will migrate to where the fast money is, and dreaming of getting rich quick is addictive.

>> it's a surprise. it's a whole notion of somebody getting something that they probably didn't deserve. luck be a lady tonight

>> we sing about it, we make movies about it. we even make fools of ourselves on television just to get our hands on more of it. millions of us are laying down a buck in hopes of winning a lot more of it. does that make us inherently greedy or just eager for better? so eager, a study found that folks earning less than $13,000 a year spend $645 of those dollars or 9% of their income on lottery tickets.

>> it's all about making it in america in some way, and lottery is really kind of a way that really doesn't exist for most of us, but it's vicarious.

>> five years ago, cynthia stafford was struggling to support five kids and make ends meet. she won $112 million.

>> we all have dreams, and they do come true. you just got to believe in them and allow them to happen.

>> but of course, this dream comes with odds of 176 million to 1. as for cynthia, she runs her own company and her own charitable foundation , and oh, she, too, has a ticket for tonight's drawing. kevin tibbles, nbc news, chicago.

2 studies tie pesticide to bee population crashes

AAAS / Science

A bee with a transmitter glued to its back was one of the specimens in a study that used the radio technology to track what happened to bee colonies exposed to a widely used pesticide.

By Miguel Llanos, msnbc.com

A widely used?farm pesticide first introduced in the 1990s has caused significant changes to bee colonies?and removing it could be the key factor in restoring nature's army of pollinators, according to two studies released Thursday.

The scientists behind the studies?in Europe?called for regulators to consider banning the class of?chemicals known as neonicotinoid insecticides. In the U.S., the Environmental Protection Agency told msnbc.com that the studies would be incorporated into a review that's currently under way.

A pesticide?trade group questioned the data, saying the levels of pesticide used were unrealistically high, while the researchers said the levels used were typical of what bees would find on farms.

"Our study raises important issues regarding pesticide authorization procedures,"?stated Mikael Henry, co-author of a study on?honey bees. "So far, they mostly require manufacturers to ensure that doses encountered on the field do not kill bees, but they basically ignore the consequences of doses that do not kill them but may cause behavioral difficulties."

"There is an urgent need to develop alternatives to the widespread use of neonicotinoid pesticides on flowering crops wherever possible," added the authors of the second study on bumble bees.

Last week, a coalition of environmental groups and beekeepers asked the EPA to suspend the use of the pesticide, which is widely used in flowering crops like?corn, sunflower and cotton to combat insects.

The studies are the first?to go outside the lab and into the fields, where the experts said they?detected how the pesticide impacts bees as they collect pollen and pollinate flowers and crops.

Honey bee populations have been crashing around the world in recent years, and pesticides have been suspected, along with other potential factors such as parasites, disease?and habitat loss, in what's known as Colony Collapse Disorder. In the U.S., some beekeepers in 2006 began reporting losses of 30-90 percent of their hives, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Combating Colony Collapse Disorder is hardly an esoteric exercise. The USDA notes that "bee pollination is responsible for $15 billion in added crop value, particularly for specialty crops such as almonds and other nuts, berries, fruits, and vegetables.

"About one mouthful in three in the diet directly or indirectly benefits from honey bee pollination," it adds.

Published in the peer-reviewed journal Science, one study by?British scientists?looked at honey bees and the other by French scientists examined bumble bees, which unlike honey bees live in the wild but also are key pollinators.

In the?bumble bee study, researchers concluded that?colonies treated with?nonlethal levels of?the pesticide "had a significantly reduced growth rate and suffered an 85% reduction in production of new queens" compared to colonies without the pesticide.

"It was quite?massive,"?researcher Penelope Whitehorn said of the reduction?at a press conference Thursday.?(Click here for audio of the news conference.)

"Bumble bees have an annual life cycle and it is only new queens that survive the winter to found colonies in the spring," the authors noted. "Our results suggest that trace levels of neonicotinoid pesticides can have strong negative consequence for queen production by bumble bee colonies under realistic field conditions, and this is likely to have a substantial population-level impact."

In the honey bee study, radio transmitters were attached to the back of?bees?to see how they foraged in conditions with and without the pesticide.

The pesticide, the researchers concluded, impaired the homing ability of bees and exposed bees were two to three times more likely to die while away from the hive. That?"high mortality ...?could put a colony at risk of collapse" within a few weeks of exposure, especially in combination with other stressors,?they noted.

"We were actually quite surprised by the magnitude," Henry told reporters.

CropLife America, a pesticides trade group, said in a statement that the studies "fail to account for the many real-world factors that impact bee and colony health, and the researchers used unrealistic pesticide dose levels that are not commonly found in practical field situations in agriculture."?

Dave Goulson, a University of Stirling?researcher with the?bumble bee study, countered that the?scientific papers?"are the closest studies to date to look at the real world situation."

A leading U.S. researcher said the honey bee study "did use a higher dose than?we have seen in pollen and nectar."

That study is "not fatally flawed," added Jeff Pettis of the USDA's Bee Research Laboratory, "but the higher dose must be considered as being a factor in why they saw the loss of bees."

"The bumble bee study, however, used a very realistic dose and the effect on reproduction was the major finding," he told msnbc.com. "The bumble bee study was very convincing in my opinion in being realistic and showing a significant impact on reproduction."

CropLife America?spokeswoman Mary Emma Young said the dose in the bumble bee study was "a high level, but not as excessive" as in the honey bee study,?and that "similar studies on bumble bees did not show these effects, so more research may be needed."

In the honey bee study, the authors said they tested the bees?at an "intensive cereal farming system" in France and used sublethal?amounts of?thiamethoxam, "a recently marketed neonicotinoid substance currently being authorized in an increasing number of countries worldwide for the protection of oilseed rape, maize and other blooming crops foraged by honey bees."

Goulson noted that EPA rules don't require pesticide makers to test the product as bees navigate over natural distances and yet?that "is where the problems seem to start."

The EPA, contacted by msnbc.com, said?it has "begun reviewing the two studies ... and they will be considered" as part of an?ongoing process that reviews chemicals. Non-EPA scientists will weigh in at a special meeting in the fall, it added.

The prevailing view among most scientists and regulators is that?"complex interactions among multiple stressors" are?to blame, the EPA stated.? "While our understanding of the potential role of pesticides in pollinator health declines is still progressing, we continue to seek to learn what regulatory changes, if any, may be effective."

Samsung's vacuum tube driven speaker lineup gets priced for US, available this Spring

Image
It's no secret that Samsung's been teasing a major interest in premium audio since CES, blending digitally powered speakers with vacuum tube pre-amplifiers. We didn't get a chance to check the systems out in Vegas, but today the company's spilling the details regarding US pricing on a trio of systems, all of which will be available in the Spring. The star of the show is the $800 DA-E750 Audio Dock, featuring the rear-mounted dual dock for Galaxy (charging only) and iOS devices we first saw last month. Clad in a polished wood case (available in black or cherry), the 2.1 stereo system pumps out up to 100 watts of power through its glass fiber speakers and tweeters. As an added touch, its JJ Electronics 12AU7 tubes (the same you could use for guitar amps) are sunken in from its top under glass, allowing for clear view of their glow. Best of all, aside from the requisite USB and 3.5mm inputs, the DA-870 works wirelessly with Samsung's AllShare Play, AirPlay and Bluetooth 3.0 w/ aptX.

Moving past the HiFi category, Samsung's also priced a duo of surround sound systems aimed at the home theater market. To start, there's the $1,000 HT-E6730W Blu-ray 3D 7.1 home theater system and its $800 5.1 sibling, the HT-E6500W Blu-ray 3D -- both of which feature the same tube pre-amp and similar wireless capabilities as the DA-E750. Notably, the E6730W features a tiltable top speaker on each of its stereo towers, allowing for a more personalized output depending on your room. Furthermore, if you happen to have a DA-E750, too, you'll be able to stream the audio via Bluetooth if you find yourself far away from your television. There's no exact date on when you'll be able snag any of them, but Samsung notes that the 5.1 system is currently shipping.

Kuwait names new central bank governor

(AP) ? Kuwait is promoting the central bank's deputy governor to the institution's top spot following the resignation of its long-serving leader last month.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Mustafa al-Shimali told state news agency KUNA on Sunday that the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Mohammed Yusef al-Hashel as governor of Kuwait's central bank.

Al-Hashel has served as the acting head of the bank since the resignation last month of former governor Sheik Salem Abdulaziz Al-Sabah, a member of the country's ruling family.

Sheik Salem led the bank for more than 25 years. He had expressed concerns about a rapid rise in government spending, including substantial wage increases for oil workers and others.

Syria's first lady faces sanctions, contempt

BEIRUT (AP) ? As Syria's bloodshed deepens, the British-born first lady has become an object of contempt for many, a Marie Antoinette figure who shopped online for crystal-encrusted Christian Louboutin stilettos while her country burned.

The European Union slapped sanctions Friday on Asma Assad, the 36-year-old wife of the president who for the past decade offered a veneer of respectability to one of the world's most opaque and ruthless dictatorships.

The Syrian government's ferocious crackdown on a year-old uprising has shattered the image of her as a glamorous, reform-minded woman who could help bring progressive values to a country that has been ruled by the Assad family dynasty for more than 40 years.

The European action ? the latest punishment imposed by world leaders on Syria for its crackdown ? bans her from traveling to EU countries and freezing any assets she may have there.

"She is one of the regime's deceptions," said Amer Mattar, a 26-year-old Syrian who recently fled the country because of the violence that has killed 8,000 people in the past year. "She is definitely part of this ugly formula in Syria."

A trove of emails ? purported to be from the private accounts of Bashar and Asma Assad and published last month by London's Guardian newspaper ? have helped unmask that deception. They appear to capture the first lady splurging on luxury goods as violence sweeps her country, placing orders for expensive jewelry, bespoke furniture, and a 2,650-pound ($4,200) vase from Harrods department store in London.

Born Asma Akhras to a prominent Syrian family living in the U.K., the future first lady grew up in the west London suburbs, a generally affluent, quiet part of the city with comfortable houses, tree-lined streets and large parks.

In a haunting twist, her family is originally from Homs, a city in central Syria that regime forces have besieged with tanks, snipers and relentless shelling to crush the resistance there. The bloodied city is now a symbol of the uprising.

Known among childhood friends as "Emma," Asma studied at King's College London, graduating in 1996 with a degree in computer science and a diploma in French literature. She was working at JP Morgan in London when she met Bashar Assad, who was then the son of the Syrian president, reportedly during a family vacation to the country.

Despite their divergent upbringings, the two could trade stories about life in London. Bashar had studied ophthalmology in London before returning to Syria to prepare for a life in politics. He was groomed for the presidency after his older brother, Basil, widely regarded as his father's chosen heir, died in a 1994 car crash.

The couple married in 2000 ? the same year Bashar inherited power from his father ? and Asma quickly became a glamorous face of the new regime. With her honey-colored hair and designer clothes, Asma provided a charming counterpoint to Bashar's gawky, somewhat awkward demeanor.

She was outspoken about humanitarian issues, a fact that many Syrian now point to as a sign of deep hypocrisy. In 2009, she decried an Israeli siege in Gaza as "barbaric," telling CNN that the world was "working against the clock" to save lives there.

"This is the 21st century," she said in the interview. "Where in the world could this happen? ... As a mother and as a human being, we need to make sure that these atrocities stop."

Before the Syrian uprising began in March 2011, the Assads often were spotted driving around town, even photographed in Damascus riding bicycles with their three children: Hafez, who is 10; Zein, 8, and Kareem, 7. They live in an apartment in the upscale Abu Rummaneh district of Damascus, as opposed to a palatial mansion like other Arab leaders.

In the years after her husband ascended to the presidency, Asma played a key role in shoring up the image of the regime, gathering fawning headlines from feature writers and fluffy profiles in fashion magazines.

"Du chic, du chic et encore du chic," gushed France's Elle magazine in 2008, which went on to name her the world's most stylish woman. In 2009, Britain's top-selling tabloid The Sun introduced its readers to the "sexy Brit" who was "bringing Syria in from the cold."

One profile in particular, a deluxe spread in Vogue magazine, has come back to haunt her. Published only a month before the start of Syria's crackdown, the article rehashed the main staples of the Asma legend: Her "killer IQ"; her charity work; and the notion that, like Disney's Princess Jasmine, Asma liked to slip out into the country incognito to meet her people.

But the article ? which has since been pulled from Vogue's website ? has been ridiculed as sinister in retrospect.

The Assad household, the article says, is run on "wildly democratic principles" and is equipped with a blackboard which tracks when anyone raises their voice. In the article, Bashar explains why he studied ophthalmology as his chosen field of medicine. The reason, he says, is "there is very little blood."

Asma has been mostly out of sight in the year since her husband's regime came under fire. Although she has been largely silent, she appears to be standing by her man.

She showed up briefly at a pro-regime rally in January, smiling with her children as her husband said the "conspiracy" against Syria was in its final stage. On Feb. 26, dressed in a conservative black dress, she accompanied her husband to a polling station during a referendum on a new constitution..

In one of the emails obtained by the Guardian, she describes herself as "the real dictator" in the family, a tacit acknowledgment that her husband is seen in the wider world as a despot leading a suffocating regime.

The emails portray Asma as an enthusiastic online shopper. One of the emails published by the Guardian ? apparently sent as Syrian forces were preparing their ferocious assault on Homs ? appeared to catch her asking a friend what she thought about a pair of 6-inch Christian Louboutin heels, laden with crystals.

"I don't think they're going 2 b useful any time soon unfortunately," the unidentified friend replies.

The Associated Press has not been able to obtain any of the emails or independently confirm their contents.

It's not just Asma's English princess image that's been wrecked by the emails; her fairy tale marriage has also come under scrutiny. Last week, The Telegraph in London published a photograph apparently sent to her husband's account of a nearly naked woman pressing her hands against a wall. The woman's identity is not known, but the paper said it wasn't his wife.

SES and Samsung at Africa Forum: Unveiling of Africa?s First Television with an Integrated Free-to-Air Satellite Receiver

SES (Paris:SESG)(LuxX:SESG) announced at the Samsung Africa Forum in Cape Town, South Africa, that it is collaborating with Samsung to drive digital broadcasting via satellite in sub-Saharan Africa. Samsung will introduce an LED television with an integrated free-to-air satellite receiver, the Samsung LED TV Free Satellite that will be distributed in Nigeria, Ghana, Cote D?Ivoire, Senegal, Democratic Republic of Congo and Cameroon in August 2012. Distribution in additional countries will follow.

The integrated satellite receiver will allow consumers to receive free-to-air television channels without the need for an additional set top box as the LED TV will be directly connected with the satellite dish. In preparation for the launch, SES and Samsung will jointly arrange training sessions with distribution partners and installers to ensure the proper connection of the TV device to the satellite dish. Both partners will also run a joint marketing campaign in June 2012.

As a leader in the free-to-air TV market, SES delivers more than 60 free-to-air channels in more than 40 African countries. The launch of the new Samsung LED TV Free Satellite coincides with more channels becoming available in Africa.

"This collaboration is the first of its kind and will drive digitalization in Africa," said Christoph Limmer, SES?s Senior Director of Marketing Development and Marketing in Africa. "Today, one out of three households in Africa has a TV set but less than 10 million homes receive content in digital format. Our cooperation will not only help to improve access to digital content for African consumers but it will also encourage African broadcasters to launch more content. In servicing more than 40 African countries, we are well aware of the huge demand for more and higher quality TV services. The opportunity lies in providing an increasingly sophisticated African viewership with a significantly increased number of TV channels ? a first for many African countries.?

?The Samsung LED TV Free Satellite is our contribution to the continent?s efforts to ?go digital?, providing African consumers with greater choice and broadcasters with the opportunity to grow the region?s media industry,? says Dae Hee Kim, Regional Product Manager at Samsung Africa.

Developing nations to name two candidates for World Bank

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Nigerian Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and former Colombian Finance Minister Jose Antonio Ocampo are set to be nominated to lead the World Bank, sources with knowledge of emerging market efforts to find candidates said on Tuesday.

The candidacies of Okonjo-Iweala and Ocampo, who have credentials as both economists and diplomats and according to sources the respective backing of Brazil and South Africa, pose a challenge to the United States, whose hold on the top post has never been contested.

But with its majority of votes and the expected support of European countries, the United States is still likely to ensure that another American will succeed Robert Zoellick, who plans to step down when his term expires at the end of June.

Washington has held the presidency since the Bank's founding after World War Two, while a European has always led the International Monetary Fund. It has yet to publicly identify a nominee to succeed Zoellick.

The deadline for submitting nominations is Friday, and the Obama administration has said it will name a candidate by then.

All of the World Bank's 187 members nations have committed to a merit-based process to select Zoellick's successor.

Emerging and developing economies have long talked up their desire to break U.S. and European dominance of the Bretton Woods Institutions, but have until now have failed to build a coalition large enough to change the status quo.

Three sources said Ocampo, currently a professor at Columbia University in New York, would be formally nominated by Brazil.

One source said Okonjo-Iweala could be nominated on Wednesday, while two other sources said it would be Friday.

Nominations will be submitted to the 25-member World Bank board, which has said it will decide on the next president within the next month.

Two sources said Okonjo-Iweala's candidacy had the blessing of Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, who convinced her to join his cabinet last year to lend more weight to his reform agenda.

"IMPRESSIVE CREDENTIALS"

The decision to nominate Okonjo-Iweala and Ocampo followed weeks of discussions among emerging and developing countries at the World Bank board including China and India.

Two sources said South Africa's director at the World Bank board, Renosi Mokate, who also represents Nigeria and other English-speaking African countries, personally flew to Abuja to consult with Okonjo-Iweala about her nomination.

"The impressive credentials of both Ocampo and Okonjo-Iweala puts tremendous pressure on the White House to come up with a candidate of at least equivalent standing," said Domenico Lombardi, a former World Bank board official now at the Brookings Institution in Washington.

"This signals a big shift and really reflects a game change," Lombardi added. "This is the first time in history we have a truly contested election."

Okonjo-Iweala, who left the World Bank as managing director last year to become Nigeria's finance minister, and Ocampo, a former U.N. under-secretary for economic and social affairs, will join American economist Jeffrey Sachs, who has the backing of a handful of small countries, on the nomination list.

Sources with knowledge of the administration's thinking say Washington has focused on convincing a woman to enter the race, which could go some way to address calls by emerging market nations for change. A woman has never led the bank.

Susan Rice, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, was a leading contender, however, it is not clear she wants the job, sources have said. Former adviser to President Barack Obama, Lawrence Summers, has also been short-listed for the job. He has declined to comment.

U.S. Senator John Kerry and PepsiCo's Indian-born CEO Indra Nooyi also made an Obama administration shortlist, according to a source, although Kerry has publicly ruled out the job and Nooyi is no longer in contention, according to another source.

Sachs has said he aims to challenge with his candidacy what he sees as a history of political appointments by the White House and acknowledges he does not have the support of the Obama administration. He was formally nominated by Bhutan and a grouping of developing countries including East Timor, Jordan, Kenya, Namibia and Malaysia.

Lombardi said the test was whether large emerging economies like China would rally support for Ocampo and Okonjo-Iweala, or in the end vote for a U.S. nominee.

FAILED RALLY AT IMF

Last year, Brazil and China failed to rally around Mexico's central bank chief, Agustin Carstens, for the top post at the IMF, instead favoring former French Finance Minister Christine Lagarde, who now heads the institution.

The United States has insisted that to keep funding flowing from Congress for the World Bank, it is important to retain the presidency.

It is unclear if big emerging nations such as China and India would support a fellow developing nation candidate.

He Fan, deputy director of the institute of world economics and politics at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, a top government think-tank, said he thought Beijing would do so.

But Yi Xianrong, an economist at the same institute, said "the most important thing is to have a capable person with energy and expertise...it doesn't matter whether the candidate is?from the United States, Germany or developing countries."

"We need to see whether the candidates'?value standards and judgment are in line with the World Bank's goals. We can increase our influence in the World Bank through increases in our voting rights," Yi added.

A senior Indian government source said it didn't "have any favorites, no probables."

With just two days left, India is not planning to change that position. Asked whether India would support a developing world candidate, the source said, "If it comes up we will decide; let's see."

Judges: Ex-Irish leader Ahern took secret payments

(AP) ? Former Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern received ?209,779 ($276,000) in secret payments while in office and repeatedly told lies about this under oath, a mammoth fact-finding investigation ruled Thursday in a long-awaited verdict.

The three judges of the Mahon tribunal stopped short of finding Ahern guilty of corruption, because they found no evidence that Ahern gave favors to any of his donors of cash when he was finance minister in the 1990s.

They did find two other former lawmakers in Ahern's Fianna Fail party, including former Cabinet minister and European Union commissioner Padraig Flynn, guilty of corrupt acts.

Ahern, whose often bizarre and implausible 2007 testimony enraptured the nation, denied doing anything wrong but resigned from office in 2008 after 11 years in power. He offered no response to Thursday's findings.

Interest in the judges' final 3,211-page report ? the product of a 15-year investigation expected to cost taxpayers more than ?200 million ($260 million) ? was so great that the investigators' Web site repeatedly crashed.

"Much of the explanation provided by Mr. Ahern as to the source of the substantial funds identified and inquired into in the course of the tribunal's public hearings was deemed by the tribunal to be untrue," the judges found.

They accused Ahern's government, which founded the original fact-finding tribunal in 1997, of launching a sustained attack on their work once the target of their investigation turned to Ahern himself.

During his 15 days of testimony in 2007, Ahern admitted keeping most of the money in personal safes, failing to keep a personal bank account during much of the time under investigation, and failing to pay tax on any of it until the investigators uncovered its existence.

Study: Did St. Patrick sell slaves to the Irish?

By msnbc.com staff and news services

LONDON -- St. Patrick, patron saint of Ireland, may well have been a tax collector for the Romans who fled to Ireland where he could have traded slaves to pay his way, according to new research by a University of Cambridge academic published on Saturday.

The generally accepted account of the saint's life, albeit based on scant evidence, says Patrick was abducted from western Britain as a teenager and forced into slavery in Ireland for six years during which time he developed a strong Christian faith.

Afterwards, the account continues, he escaped his captors and went back to Britain before eventually returning to Ireland as a missionary.

But Roy Flechner, from the Department of Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic at Cambridge, believes there are reasonable grounds to question the popular version which is based partly on Patrick's own words.

"The problem with this account is that he was telling this story in response to accusations leveled against him that he fled to Ireland for financial gain," Flechner told Reuters in a telephone interview.

"It's an inference that has been made long before in conventional scholarship."

10 best St. Patrick's Day parades for families

According to the study, published on Saturday to coincide with St. Patrick's Day, the saint may have wanted to leave Britain in the early 400s to avoid the "onerous" duties of a "Decurion", or Roman official responsible for collecting taxes.

Patrick's father was a Decurion and, when he decided to rid himself of the post by becoming a cleric, his responsibilities would have fallen to his son.

Slaves were his 'liquid assets'
At a time when Roman government in Britain was in decline, collecting and underwriting taxes would have been an unwelcome task, enough to prompt Patrick to emigrate, Flechner said.

"It is likely that at least for a while he (Patrick) held an imperial office. One way or another, I think this would have been the catalyst for him leaving for Ireland."

The academic also questioned Patrick's own account of escaping slavery in Ireland.

"Once you escaped from slavery you lacked any legal status and anyone could imprison you and kill you, and this conflicts with what he said -- that he broke loose, crossed Ireland and then the Irish Sea to get back to Britain," he explained.

"He might not even have been acknowledged as a free man in his native Britain and could have been enslaved again there."

If Patrick had left Britain for Ireland of his own free will, the best way to take his wealth with him would be in the form of slaves, Flechner argued.

Patrick himself said his family owned slaves, which was common for aristocratic families in this period.

"Your property would have been hereditary and in the form of land, but if you had wanted to transport the value of the property, it is more likely you would have traded a more 'liquid asset', in this case slaves.

"In a slightly later period where we do have more sources, slaves had become a very important social institution and quite ubiquitous in Ireland."

Flechner conceded that it was difficult to be sure of any theory about a period of British history covered by so little reliable material.

But he added that his study had the advantage of being "free from the more reverential accounts of St. Patrick that have been handed down in legend through the generations.

"In this case we are seeing Patrick through the eyes of Roman law which offers a new perspective.

"None of this is to say that Patrick was not a bishop or that he did not engage in missionary activity, but his primary motives for moving to Ireland were most likely to escape the poisoned chalice of his inherited position in Roman Britain."

Reuters contributed to this report.
