Looks like Warner Bros. and DC are getting a bit antsy watching the fanboy world gush over Joss Whedon and the smart moves being made by Disney/Marvel, and so here comes their attempt to steal a little thunder. According to Variety, the studio has approached Ben Affleck for some early discussions regarding him possibly directing their Justice League movie. Yup, that Ben Affleck. Nothing is set in stone yet and it seems like even Variety's story might be a bit premature, but Warner Bros.'?meeting with Affleck means they're trying to put the pieces in place for their run at DC Comics movies sooner rather than watch Marvel soak up all the fan favor.
So is Affleck the right man for the job? What we know is that the guy really hasn't directed a bad film yet. From Gone Baby Gone to The Town to the upcoming Argo, Affleck is quietly carving out a spot as a director who delivers fascinating ensemble stories that entertain like gangbusters... and that's exactly what Warner Bros.?wants Justice League to be. Remember, like The Avengers, this is a film that could potentially include a superhero lineup featuring Batman, Superman, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, the Flash?and Aquaman, and so not only do you need a director who knows his way around an ensemble, but you need a guy who knows how to deliver a satisfying superhero experience for the fans.?
Affleck isn't as overtly nerdy as Joss Whedon (though he did star as Daredevil once, and then turned around years later and complained about how awful the experience was), but he's a solid director who could deliver a more serious, Dark Knight-ish vibe if that's the direction Warner Bros.?wants to go with?its DC Comics slate. Obviously there's a lot more to discuss if and when this man gets the job, but let's start by asking you: Is Ben Affleck the guy you want directing Justice League?
